HOODIA GORDONII- Weight loss; is this what you really want…to loose weight? Well the holidays are fast approaching, and you have just spent the entire summer in the hot and sticky weather in a ‘weight state’ that you might consider to be embarrassing. So you tell me… have you hit bottom yet? Do you rally want to be a different person, one that has more energy, and feels good about the way they look and the kinds of clothes that they can wear? You get the point…so please don’t ‘weight’ until after the New Years to make your resolution to do what you know you need to do RIGHT NOW! This is the crux of the issue! If you don’t take in more calories than you burn you loose weight without even trying! The trouble is that it isn’t that easy is it, nothing ever is it? The first time you see that doughnut, or that piece of pie and smell how delicious it smells, you want to dive in with both hands. So how do you get around the feelings of hunger and the cravings that are associated with these feelings? Well…there may be a way, not long ago an herb/succulent called Hoodia Gordonii (HG) was discovered in Africa that was found to help curb your appetite. This wonderful plant has recently been pushed into the spot light of a public interest as a supplement for weight loss, because it has the capability to suppress hunger and thirst. So you see; there is hope. Where does the process starts…that is helping you to get things back under control? When you eat a meal your body begins to change. Heart rate goes up and so does your metabolism (depending on what you eat). And if you are eating ‘nourishing’ foods (those foods that the body needs to make hormones and to maintain over all health), you are well on your way to shedding that weight you so badly want to get rid of. Is there a physiological brass ring? Well…there is one chemical process that is instrumental in helping you to loose weight, mostly because it controls the area where it all begins…food intake. Before we go on to discuss Hoodia in more detail we need to go over one thing. Most people eat because they don’t feel full, they are always hungry mostly because what they are eating is junk. And then there are those folks that eat way too much, to fast! The first issue is one that occurs because they have eaten some much (volume and empty calories) in the past that their stomachs are stretched out of shape, in some cases permanently (Please keep in mind these empty calories provide absolutely no appreciable nutrient content to support the body). So the hormones that are typically released due to the physical stretching of the stomach, and are made from the nutrients we ingest, are not released. The second issue is that some people eat so fast that their bodies don’t have time to react to the onslaught of food. And by the time it does, and they start to feel full they have already eaten way more than they should have. What controls this whole process, one of the answers is among other things a chemical that the body makes that affects the central nervous system (CNS) called Cholecystokynin (CCK). It has a direct affect on appetite but may also be active peripherally on appetite regulation by way of the vagal afferent nerves. (CCK) is a peptide hormone well known for its strong appetite regulatory properties. How do we increase the production of CCK? Well, as discussed there is a product that may be one of the keys to the kingdom! It has been shown that we can control how and when the body will release CCK. Hoodia Gordonii contains an ingredient which may help the body to release CCK and promote the feelings of being full, or even better…not being hungry! The most recent research on the herb shows that it has a direct affect in suppressing hunger and thirst by mimicking the effect that glucose has on nerve cells in the brain, curbing the appetite. Hoodia is a steroidal trisaccharide called 3-O-[-beta-D-thevetopyranosyl-(1—>4)-beta-D-cymaropyranosyl-(1—>4)-beta-D-cymaropyranosyl]-12beta-O-tigloyloxy-14-hydroxy-14beta-pregn-5-en-20-one. That’s quite a mouthful, but it is really Mother Nature at her best. It really isn’t so important that you know this (what is in it), as it is that you know how it will make you feel! As stated, Hoodia is a product that offers a phyto chemical known to assist the body in the weight loss process. It allows the body to do what nature intended it to do in maintaining an ideal body profile. It is a non-stimulant ingredient so it does not make you jittery. And if used in conjunction with an exercise program and a common sense dietary regimen, you will be light years ahead of any attempt you have made in the past to shed the unwanted weight. There are currently no studies evaluating the use of Hoodia during pregnancy and lactation, so its use cannot be recommended during this time.
